Pete Short was inspired by both Randy Reynolds’ chess cartoon, and his opponent using his non USCF approved chess computer program to keep track of his notation at the Denver Chess Club on Tuesday Jan 12, 2010. Pete could tell his opponent was not actually using the engine in his computer when his opponent dropped a pawn and the exchange in the opening! Click on the image for the full sized version
Thanks Pete!!
You often find humorous inspiration at the chess board. The FFFFFUUUUU concept is the perfect vehicle to express odd, humorous, and outlandish behavior witnessed across the 64 squares.
Randy’s view of draws is something almost every tournament chess player has witnessed. I have on two occasions had players question the use of my Monroi – but I was floored when my opponent last Tuesday decided that a low cost alternative to purchasing a Monroi was to use his PDA to notate moves.
I hope the cartoon does not offend my opponent in the event he sees this cartoon. The one comment I never would have said (outloud at any rate) was FU. In point of fact, it was obvious even without his unfortunate blunder that he was not using the PDA as a reference with a chess computer crunching moves in the background.
But for all of you “players” out there considering trying this practice yourself if you face me in a game – My go forward policy is “Not No – But Hell No” to the use of anything other than a paper score sheet or a FIDE approved Monroi.
So FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU!!!!
actually physically writing the moves makes me concentrate harder on the board and position so I don’t think I’ll ever stray from good ole pen and paper
What I don’t understand is what the “DN” button on your opponent’s shirt stands for.
What program was he using? I need to get that on my non-FIDE approved iTouch!!
Randy, According to Pete he was wearing a Denver Nuggets shirt that said “DN” on it.
